Legacy & Final Words
Leave more than your name behind.
An obituary is what others write about you. A will is what you leave them. A legacy is what you say. WordsLater is built for the words you want the people you love to hear after you're gone - the apologies, the blessings, the stories, the quiet "I'm proud of you" that should reach them at exactly the right moment. We hold those words privately and deliver them only when verified that you've passed.
What a Legacy of Words Can Look Like
Some people leave one letter. Others leave a lifetime.
Start with one letter. It can change everything.
Free to start. Private from the first word. You can edit anytime.
Start Free See Legacy PlanHow Final Messages Are Delivered
A careful, multi-step process - never automatic, never accidental.
You write and seal your messages
Compose letters, record videos, attach photos and keepsakes. Mark them for posthumous delivery and choose who they go to.
You designate trusted contacts
Choose 1-3 people who can later confirm your status - usually a spouse, sibling, adult child, or close friend. They never see the content of your messages.
We run gentle check-ins while you're here
On the schedule you choose, we send a short "still here?" message. One click confirms you're well and resets the timer.
Multi-step verification when needed
After multiple missed check-ins, we reach out to your trusted contacts. Verification requires confirmation from multiple people - never a single unverified report - usually paired with supporting evidence.
Your words reach the people you chose
Once verified, your sealed messages are delivered to the recipients you selected, exactly as you wrote them - with the date you composed them.
If You Don't Know Where to Start
- What's the one thing I most want them to know - that I might never have said out loud?
- What memory of us do I most want them to hold onto?
- What am I most proud of them for?
- What do I want them to forgive me for?
- What blessing or wish do I want to leave them with?
- What do I want them to do on their hardest days without me?
Stories to Preserve
- How my parents met - and the world they grew up in.
- The hardest year of my life, and what got me through it.
- The moment I knew I loved you.
- The day each of my children was born.
- The advice my own grandparent gave me that I still carry.
- The recipe / song / place that always feels like home.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does WordsLater know when to send my final messages?
Through a combination of automated check-ins (a quick email or SMS on a schedule you choose), confirmation from your trusted contacts, and supporting evidence. Multiple confirmations are required - never just one. Read the full process here.
Can my trusted contacts read my legacy messages?
No. Trusted contacts only confirm your status. They never see the content of your messages. Only the recipients you've designated will ever read what you've written.
What if I write something and later change my mind?
Edit, rewrite, or delete it anytime. Until a message is delivered, you have full control. Many members revisit their legacy letters every few years and find new things to add.
Is WordsLater a replacement for a will?
No. WordsLater messages are personal communications, not legal documents. They don't replace a will, trust, or estate plan. We recommend pairing WordsLater with proper estate planning for anything legally significant.
What happens to my messages if WordsLater shuts down?
Every plan funds a long-term delivery reserve, and we maintain a documented continuity plan including encrypted off-site backups and partner arrangements - see our Data Retention & Custody page for details.
Can I include photos, videos, or attachments?
Yes. Attach photos and files, or record video and audio right in your browser. A face, a voice, a song - all can be part of what you leave behind.
Can I designate a trusted person to manage my account if needed?
Yes. You can name a digital executor with limited rights - they can trigger updates to recipient contact info or pause deliveries, but they cannot read or alter the content of your messages.
Which plans include posthumous delivery?
Posthumous delivery is included on Family, Legacy, and Lifetime plans. Legacy and Lifetime also include trusted contacts and a secure document vault. See plan comparison for details.
